Tin-Can Privacy Policy
Tin-Can is an application for your mobile device that sends messages by a pairing protocol that uses WiFi, BLE, or near-ultrasonic audio.
Tin-Can’s Privacy Policy describes how we handle your personal information when you use our products and services. This document also details how we use and share your personal information. Your privacy and information are important, so please take the time to read it carefully.
This Privacy Policy applies to Tin-Can LLC’s mobile app and services ("Services"), and any information appearing on the Services (all referred to as "Content"), and other interactions (e.g., customer inquiries, emails, etc.) you may have with Tin-Can LLC. If you do not agree with the terms, we kindly ask that you do not access or use the Services.
The terms "us," "we," or "our" refer to Tin-Can LLC.
Your Consent:
Please don't post sensitive information to Tin-Can!
You accept this Privacy Policy when you interact with Tin-Can in any way or capacity, including signing up for our Service, downloading the mobile app, accessing and using our product or Services. You agree that by taking any of these actions, you agree, understand and consent to the collection, use, and storage of this Content by anyone using Tin-Can as required by the app to provide its Services.
Tin-Can may amend this Privacy Policy at any time by posting a revised version on our website and in our app. The modified version of this policy will always be effective as of the published effective date.
How Tin-Can Messaging Works:
At its core Tin-Can is a messaging app, but with one key difference. Tin-Can never connects to the internet or cellular network. When you post a message on Tin-Can, that message must “hop” from your mobile device to another mobile device to spread. When two devices with Tin-Can are close to each other, they exchange messages that they don’t have in common. Users can post using hashtags which are searchable by other users. Tin-Can pairing has a maximum range of about 200 meters, but the range varies due to environmental conditions and hardware.
Clearly, Tin-Can is not an efficient global messaging platform. No one can see every Tin-Can message that is out there. If you post a Tin-Can message in Atlanta, it can’t be read by someone in Beijing until a mobile device with Tin-Can physically carries it there. However, in some ways Tin-Can is special. Tin-Can is not affected where access to the internet is unavailable or has been disrupted.
How Your Information Is (and is not) Collected:
Tin-Can has no central database and thus, we store very little or no identifying information in our systems and do not collect messages or data that is posted by users. However, Tin-Can LLC may collect some information when using our Services:
- Tin Can may collect miscellaneous information from you as a result of contacting Tin Can or your use of the Services including bug reports, chat messages and other relevant communications between you and Tin Can.
- Children – We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under the age of thirteen (13). If you are under the age of thirteen (13), please do not submit any personal data through the mobile app or any Tin-Can Services. We encourage parents and legal guardians to monitor their children’s Internet usage and to help enforce our privacy policy by instructing their children never to provide personal data through the mobile app or any Tin-Can’s Services without their permission.
All Content on Tin-Can is public and cannot be monitored or controlled by Tin-Can LLC or any other entity. We cannot measure, regulate, remove, or control Content on Tin-Can.
Public Information:
Although Tin-Can is not a global messaging app, most activity on Tin-Can is public. This includes your username, your posts and certain information about your posts. Information posted about you by other users of our Services may also be public. For example, another user may post a message about you that includes a hashtag(s), which allows other users to see that message by searching that particular hashtag(s). You are responsible for your post and other information you provide through our Services, and you should think carefully about what you make public, especially if it is sensitive information.
International Privacy Laws:
If you are visiting the website or using the mobile app while travelling outside the United States, please be aware that you are potentially sending information (including your personal data) to users in foreign countries. These countries (including the United States) may not necessarily have data protection laws as comprehensive or protective as those in your country of residence; however, our collection, storage and use of your personal data will at all times continue to be governed by this Privacy Policy.
Law, Harm, and the Public Interest:
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this Privacy Policy or controls we may otherwise offer to you, we may preserve, use, or disclose your personal data if we believe that it is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request; to protect the safety of any person; to protect the safety or integrity of our platform, including to help prevent spam, abuse, or malicious actors on our services, or to explain why we have removed content or accounts from our services; to address fraud, security, or technical issues; or to protect our rights or property or the rights or property of those who use our services. However, nothing in this Privacy Policy is intended to limit any legal defenses or objections that you may have to a third party’s, including a government’s, request to disclose your personal data.
Affiliates and Change of Ownership:
In the event that we are involved in a bankruptcy, merger, acquisition, reorganization, or sale of assets, your data may be sold or transferred as part of that transaction. This Privacy Policy will apply to your data as transferred to the new entity.
